  • Police have come under immense scrutiny after they were captured torturing university students after a protest
National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga has condemned the brutality with which police officers handled University of Nairobi students during Thursday, September 28 protests. Addressing a political rally on Sunday, October 1, in Busia county, Raila told his bitter rival President Uhuru Kenyatta that the blood of the protesters spilled by police is in his hands. Raila said police are supposed to protect demonstrators and arrest those who break the law instead of beating, injuring and killing them.

“I want to tell Uhuru, the blood of our people is in your hands. We demand a stop to police brutality. Freedom to picket and protest is in our constitution. Police are civil servants and must protect all Kenyans when executing their duty of maintaining law and order," Raila said amid cheers from the crowd. GSU officers on Thursday stormed the University of Nairobi and clobbered students going about their activities.

Amateur videos and photos showed police beating the harmless students with batons and hurling teargas into classrooms and hostels. Others showed students lying down as police rained them will blows and kicks. The incident has attracted massive condemnation from the public, with the government under pressure to bring the culprits to book.

Acting Interior CS Fred Matiang'i has said police officers found guilty will be punished. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinet was at pains to explain the police brutality, saying investigations were underway over the same.
